![]() ![]() Actually, I rarely even make any power plants at all as only a few buildings require a set amount of electricity. I learned very quickly that in Tropico, everyone can and will walk freely anywhere, and you aren?t forced to make that Sim City style of design to be successful. It took me awhile to wrap my head around some of the mechanics as I started off trying to play it like I would Sim City by building road infrastructures, electricity grids, residential areas and more in a symmetrical fashion. I wasn?t sure what to expect as I?m not usually very good at these types of games. I don?t really know why I never gave it a fair shot, and after playing Tropico 4, I regret not finding this series sooner. I?ve always loved the Sim City style of creation gameplay, but maybe it?s the ruling and management mechanics like Civilization that turned me away. Tropico 4 is scheduled to release for PC and Xbox 360 in August.I?ve actually never played a Tropico game before this one arrived on my doorstep, and to be honest, I?m not really sure why. Little touches such as improved citizen AI, parades in your honor, and ambient effects make Tropico 4 more attractive and satisfying – it’s a lot easier to see how your policies affect the island and its inhabitants.Ĭlassic production chains and a Challenge Editor are heading back to Tropico, so expect a deep and rewarding strategy experience filled with fresh content and extensive community support. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a lot of polish has gone into the title to lend more immersion and realism to the experience. There is also an application coming that tracks your in-game progress, which better identifies your skill as a leader. Citizens are more than just pixels each one has a family, desires, & needs -īuilding upon the game’s sense of community, social media integration is now on hand – players can send screenshots with captions of their despotic exploits to their tweeps. As with all decisions in Tropico 4, appointing locals or foreign experts will come with their own set of benefits and consequences. Another bonus mechanic is the Council of Ministers, which gives players the ability to promote either native Tropicans or external advisers to positions of power within the government. ![]() Additionally, three new superpowers have been added into the mix: China, the Middle East, and Europe. For starters, fans have been pining for much larger islands to govern, and Tropico 4 delivers, giving us landmasses 3-4 times as large as what was available previously. The most readily identifiable improvements this time around are six-fold. Both veterans of the Tropico series and newbies will find an approachable layout to implement core strategies. ![]() It was pretty effortless to select buildings, create jobs, set policy, interact with foreign powers, and zoom in and out of the lives of the citizenry. We didn’t get to test drive the Xbox 360 version, but the PC iteration has a somewhat streamlined UI that is approachable and efficient. While Tropico 4 is largely identical to the last game (something reviewers are sure to key in on), a number of refinements will likely make this an easy choice for the uninitiated. Make your island a haven for tourists or ravage its resources for personal gain. As with the last game, the object of Tropico 4 is to stay in power as long as possible while filling an off-shore bank account with kickbacks, ensuring el Presidente’s comfortable retirement long after his inevitable demise. Sitting down with Timo Thomas, I was given a guided tour of Tropico 4 on a stout gaming laptop. Major changes are not readily apparent, though a lot of time and effort has been put into refining the control scheme and user interface, as well as deepening the gameplay options at our disposal. Tropico 4 picks up where its predecessor left off, putting us back in control as caudillo of a fictitious banana republic. Recent releases such as Patrician IV and Tropico 3 provided clever scenarios in which to think my way to fun and virtual glory. This up and coming publisher has been putting out a number of strategy-heavy titles of late that have given me more hours of gaming than I care to admit. Pulling back the curtain of the Kalypso booth at E3 2011 was a lot of fun. ![]()
